How to get your EU registration certificate

What it is

The EU registration certificate (certificado de registro de ciudadano de la Unión) records that you live in Spain as an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen. It includes your NIE. It's usually a small green card or an A4 sheet.

Who needs it

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens staying in Spain for more than three months. Non-EU family members follow a different route (a family member residence card).

Before you start

You'll need:

• Your passport or national ID card (original and a copy).
• Form EX-18, filled in and signed.
• Proof you paid the fee with form 790, code 012.
• Proof of your situation, one of:
  • Employed: a work contract or a recent employer's certificate.
  • Self-employed: your autónomo registration.
  • Not working: proof of sufficient income and comprehensive health insurance valid in Spain.
  • Student: enrolment, health insurance, and a statement that you have enough money to live on.

Steps

1. Book an appointment on the government's appointment website. Choose your province, then the option for the EU citizen registration certificate.
2. Fill in form EX-18.
3. Fill in and pay form 790 code 012, choosing the EU registration certificate option. Pay at a bank and keep the stamped copy.
4. Go to your appointment with all originals and copies.
5. Receive your certificate. It's usually issued at the appointment.

Cost

One fee paid with form 790 code 012. The amount is shown on the form.

Common pitfalls

• Health insurance must be comprehensive: travel insurance and policies with co-payments are often rejected.
• Bank statements for "sufficient means" should be recent and in your name.
• Bring copies of everything.

When to ask a helper

If you're between jobs, relying on savings or a pension, or registering family members, ask someone who registered in your province recently.
