How to get your Social Security number
You need a Social Security number (número de afiliación) to work or use public healthcare. Request it with form TA.1 online through Import@ss or at a Social Security (TGSS) office.
What it is
Your Social Security number (número de la Seguridad Social or número de afiliación) is a lifelong number that links you to the Spanish Social Security system. You need it to work, register as autónomo, and access public healthcare.
Do you need to do this yourself?
- Starting a job? Many employers request the number for you. Ask them first.
- Registering as autónomo, or your employer asks you to bring it? Request it yourself using this guide.
Before you start
You'll need:
- Your passport or TIE, and your NIE if you have one. EU citizens without a NIE can use their passport number.
- Form TA.1, filled in with "assignment of Social Security number" (asignación de número de la Seguridad Social) ticked.
Steps
- Choose how to apply:
- Online through the Import@ss portal on the Social Security website. You don't need a digital certificate: use the "send a request" option, choose the procedure for obtaining a Social Security number, and attach a photo of your ID and form TA.1. With Cl@ve or a digital certificate you can also apply directly.
- In person at a Social Security Treasury (TGSS) office. Book an appointment first.
- Fill in form TA.1 and have a copy or photo of your ID ready.
- Submit online or at your appointment.
- Receive your number. In person it's usually issued on the spot; online, the reply with your number is sent to the email you gave.
Cost
Free.
Common pitfalls
- Don't confuse it with your NIE; they're different numbers.
- Keep the document showing your number; employers, doctors and your gestor will ask for it.
When to ask a helper
If the online portal won't accept your ID, or you don't have a NIE yet and need to work, ask someone who's done it recently.
