How to renew your residence and TIE
Non-EU residents renew their residence authorization first, usually online through Mercurio, in the two months before it expires (or up to three months after). Once approved, you get a new TIE with a fingerprint appointment.
What it is
Your TIE card expires when your residence authorization expires. Renewing is two steps:
- Renew the authorization with the immigration office (Oficina de Extranjería).
- Get a new TIE card from the police once the renewal is approved.
When to apply
Apply in the two months before your authorization expires. You can still apply up to three months after, but late applications can be fined. While your renewal is being processed, your application receipt lets you stay legally.
Under the immigration regulation in force since May 2025, first authorizations usually last one year and renewals four years.
Before you start
You'll need:
- Your current TIE and passport (valid).
- The renewal form for your type of residence (it depends on the authorization: work, non-lucrative, family and so on).
- Proof you still meet the requirements of your authorization (for example, contracts, income, health insurance).
- An updated padrón certificate if you've moved.
- Proof you paid the processing fee (form 790 with the code for your authorization type).
Steps
- Apply for the renewal online through the Mercurio platform (easiest with a digital certificate or Cl@ve), or through a representative such as a gestor.
- Track your application in Mercurio and wait for the decision.
- Once approved, book a fingerprint appointment (toma de huellas) for your new card.
- Pay form 790 code 012 for the card, and bring form EX-17, your passport, a photo and the approval.
- Collect your new TIE, usually about a month later.
Cost
Two government fees: one for processing the renewal, and one for the new card (790 code 012). The amounts are shown on the forms.
Common pitfalls
- Don't wait until the last week. Start as soon as the two-month window opens.
- Check the requirements for your specific permit; they differ between work, non-lucrative, student and family routes.
- Keep your application receipt with your expired TIE if you travel or need to prove your status.
When to ask a helper
Renewals vary a lot by permit type. Ask someone who renewed the same type of permit in your province recently.
