Empadronamiento in Valencia (registering at the town hall)
Registering on the padrón in València city: book an appointment through 010 or valencia.es, bring your ID and proof of address to a municipal office, and get your padrón certificate.
What it is
Empadronamiento means registering your address on the padrón, the list of residents kept by the town hall (Ajuntament de València). You need it for your SIP health card, your TIE and many other procedures. Registering is free.
This guide is for València city. If you live elsewhere in the province, register at that town's own town hall.
Before you start
You'll need:
- ID for everyone registering: passport, TIE or EU ID card.
- Proof of your address, one of:
- Renting: your current rental contract. If it has been extended, add a recent rent payment receipt.
- Owner: your deeds, or authorise the town hall to check its own property records.
- Living in someone else's home: their written authorisation, a copy of their ID, and proof they own or rent it.
- The registration form (hoja de inscripción padronal), available at the office.
Steps
- Book an appointment by calling 010 (the city information line) or online on valencia.es.
- Go to the municipal office you booked with everyone's ID and your proof of address.
- Fill in and sign the registration form at the desk.
- Get your padrón certificate (volante or certificado). Ask for one at the appointment, because you'll need it straight away for your SIP card.

Free.
Common pitfalls
- Extended rental contracts need a recent payment receipt to show you still live there.
- Everyone in the household needs ID, including children.
- Other procedures ask for a recent certificate (often less than three months old).
When to ask a helper
If your landlord won't provide documents, or you live in a shared flat or a student residence, ask someone who registered in Valencia recently.
